Testing Sand or Soil pH

  1. Place about 0.5 g of soil on a while procelain tile.
  2. Add a few drops of universal indicator, and mix to a thick paste.
  3. Dust the paste with a light sprinkling of white barium sulfate powder, 
  4. Allow it to stand for two minutes. It will absorb the liquid, but not affect the result
  5. Compare the colour to the nearest match on the card, and read off the pH number
  6. Record in your chart.
